Welcome To The Millersville University
Computer Science Department

Binary Image The Department of Computer Science maintains a strong, rigorous, state-of-the-art program in computer science with seven full-time faculty and about 300 majors. With research and advanced undergraduate elective courses in: Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality, Software Engineering, Internet Programming with Java, Human Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Database Management Systems with ORACLE, Analysis of Algorithms, Parallel Processing, and Computer Networks, our hardware and software laboratories are geared-up and plugged-in. At the Bachelor of Science level, you can prepare for either graduate study and research in computer science, or positions in business, industry, or government.

Millersville University began teaching programming courses in 1963 and the Computer Science degree was approved in 1975. Since then, we have graduated over 1,200 Computer Science majors and virtually all have become active contributing members of the computer science profession.

"Technical Artistry In Gen-3 Game Development"

By Peter Arisman - Technical Art Director - Electronic Arts

Date: Thursday, March 20th
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Armstrong Auditorium, Caputo Hall 210

Advances in computing hardware have lead to quantum leaps forward in video game graphics quality and complexity. Powerful generation-3 gaming consoles provide difficult challenges to video game artists, graphics programmers and game pipeline engineers. The technical artist is at the nexus of these three disciplines. This talk will cover core development functions within the game industry focusing on the hybrid programmer-artist role of Technical Artist. We will explore some real world technical challenges faced by game developers and will discover how the technical artist helps to provides solutions.

"Answering The Mathematical Objection to Machine Intelligence:
An Application of Machine Self-Reflection"

By Professor John Case, Ph.D.
Computer and Information Sciences Department
University of Delaware, Newark, DE

Date: Wednesday, October 17
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Roddy Hall 261

In this talk I briefly consider the standard infinite regress paradox in the notion of a machine ``having' a complete model of itself and show how to circumvent it. Then I pictorially present a simple theoretical/mathematical application of machine self-reflection and use this application as a vehicle to illustrate what Turing in his seminal paper on machine intelligence called the mathematical objection to machine intelligence. Lastly I employ machine self-reflection to completely answer this objection, and, in the process, point out a seeming limitation of human intelligence that suitably ``clever' machines do not have.

Welcome to the NEW CS Server
August 24, 2007 @ 11:11 am

Over the Summer we have been very busy with many projects, big and small. The biggest project was the installation of a new Linux server. CS has some new hardware, more memory, and better hard drives. With this also comes reset accounts. All user accounts have been restarted from scratch. All passwords are also reset back to default. If you would like your old files please see Todd in Roddy 143 or send him an email to Todd.Echterling@millersville.edu. If you have any problems with the new server please let the CSCI support team know ASAP.

Have a great semester and good luck!

-Todd Echterling
