Computers and the Disabled
One of the most socially responsible areas of research in computer science is
in the area of applying computer technology to help people with disabilities.
Here there is often a direct benefit to a population which is generally considered problematic for society.
From systems that aid in overcoming
mobility problems to augmentative and alternative communication, this research is aimed at
giving everyone a chance at a productive and fulfilling life. This research
includes cutting edge technology in graphics, robotics, speech recognition,
and image processing.
For examples of research in this area, see my papers
The following is a growing list of sites that either
perform basic research or provide direct services to people with disabilities. Although some attempt
has been made to categorize the links, realize that many of the links fit in more than one category -
in such a case a somewhat arbitrary decision was made about what category to place them in. Finally, appearance on
this list does not in any way constitute an endorsement of either the company or products.
