I am an adjunct instructor in the Computer Science Department at Millersville University.

I've been married to David Hutchens since 1987. We have two children - Helen and Mark. We live about halfway between Millersville and the Susquehanna River in south-central Pennsylvania.

My Dad was a naval aviator, so I've lived around the US usually near the coast. A rough time line would be:
- born Patuxant River, Maryland 1959
- moved to San Diego, California 1960
- to Oak Harbor, Washington about 1963
- to St. Simon's Island, Georgia 1965
- to San Diego, California 1966
- to Corpus Christi, Texas 1968
- to Virginia Beach, Virginia 1971
I remember these more by which grade I was in school than by year.

From 1971-1977, I lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia and graduated from Kempsville High School in 1977. A highlight was attending the Virginia Governor's School for the Gifted at Mary Baldwin College for a month in the summer of 1976. I went to The College of William and Mary in Virginia in Williamsburg, Virginia where I double-majored in Computer Science and English (B.S. 1981).

I then went to the University of Maryland at College Park to study Computer Science. I earned an M.S. in Computer Science in 1983 while working with Dr. Vic Basili. That's also where I met David. My dissertation was titled "Measuring the Effect of Design Techniques on Modularity and Maintainability" with research on Ada projects by both students and a team at NASA Goddard. Although I had a lot of academic support and was well on my way to getting my Ph.D., I didn't feel that the research was good enough, and I quit in 1987.

I moved to South Carolina (where David was teaching at Clemson) and started teaching Computer Science at Furman University in 1988. In 1992, we moved to Pennsylvania when David started teaching at Millersville. I've been fortunate to teach a course at Millersville almost every term since fall 1993. I currently teach one or two courses each term. That used to be in the evenings so that I could be home with the kids during the day. But now that they are in school, I teach during the day so that David and I are both home in the afternoons and evenings.

I am a Teen Girl Scout leader of Teen Troop 1104 in the Penn Manor service unit of the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania Council. I am also a Boy Scout Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 88 of Conestoga River District of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

I'm also an officer of the Millersville University Campus Club (currently secretary and chair of the scholarship committee) and president of the Lancaster County Apple Corps.

I also help the needlework designer Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum by supporting her design software and maintaining her Told in a Garden web site.
