Exam 2 Study Topics (Chapters 4 and 5)

On the day of the exam, be sure to bring your notes and your book. The written part of the exam will be worth 75 points and will be closed notes, closed book and closed neighbor. The on-line part of the exam will be open book and open notes (your own only, of course) but still absolutely closed neighbor! Please note that although the official “online” portion of the test will only be 25 points, a large portion of the points in the written section involve writing code statements and segments. You need to know your syntax.

Your exam might include the following types of questions:

1. Multiple Choice
2. Fill in the Blank
3. True/False
4. Matching
5. Definitions
6. Identify the problems in a piece of code
7. Describe the output of a piece of code
8. Write code segments

Important topics to review:

• Although the test questions will not be specifically aimed at these topics, you will still need to know about the following in order to write and interpret the programs on the test:
• Different data types
• Input/Output
• How to evaluate and write arithmetic expressions (operator precedence, etc.)
• Arithmetic operators
• Using classes (Random, Scanner, etc.)
• Writing classes
• Anatomy of a class
• Instance data
• Encapsulation (visibility modifiers, getters and setters)
• Constructors (default and additional parameters)
• Methods (getters and setters, other methods, return statements, parameters, local data)
• Boolean operators
• How to write and evaluate Boolean expressions (meaning, precedence)
• If, If/else, Nested Ifs, switch, while, do/while, for
• For the following types of statements, be able to write them, be able to find errors in them and be able to interpret code that uses them
• If statements
• If/else statements
• Nested ifs
• Switch statements
• While, do/while, for loops
• When is it best to use the different types of loops?
• Syntax
• Be able to find syntax errors in loops
• How to write loops
• How to interpret the results of loops
• The differences between the various types of loops
• Iterators: hasNext, next<X> (nextInt, nextDouble, etc.)
• Classes: File, Color, JFrame, JOptionPane, JCheckBox
• Graphical applications
• Graphical components: JButtons, JTextFields, JPanel, JLabel, JFrame, JOptionPane, JCheckBox
• ActionListeners, JPaintComponent, getSource, Parse<X> (ParseInt, ParseDouble, etc.)
• Be sure that you understand the content of the programs that we’ve written in class, labs and homework assignments.

Study Tips:

The best source of practice is the problems in your book.

Form study groups if possible. Practice doing the problems from the back of the chapters individually, then compare your answers.

Practice writing and interpreting code segments.
