Department of Computer Science

AS Degree Requirements

 

The objective of the core requirements is to provide the student with the skills that are considered to be fundamental to the study of computer science.

 

Required Computer Science Courses
CSCI 161 - Introduction to Programming I * 4 s.h
CSCI 162 - Introduction to Programming II * 4 s.h.
- and -
MATH* - Math course of your choice.
3 - 4 s.h.
  or
PHYS* - Physics course of your choice.
3 - 5 s.h.
* NOTE: These courses may not be counted in the Liberal Arts core.
Total   11 - 13 s.h.

Elective Courses

 

Students enrolled in the AS degree sequence will be required to enroll in 17 - 19 s.h. of Computer Science electives to satisfy degree requirements. Electives will be selected upon admission to the Computer Science department in consultation with the department adviser. A course of study will be designed to fit the individual student's background and needs.

Additional Requirements

 

Every Computer Science major is required to complete ENGL 312 - Technical Writing.

Liberal Arts Core

 

1. Humanities and Fine Arts 6 s.h.
     Two courses minimum totalling at least 6.0 credit hours. Select courses from: Art, Communications & Theatre, English, Foreign Languages, Music, Philosophy.
 
 
2. Science and Mathematics 9 s.h.
     Select 9.0 credit hours but not more than two courses from any one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics.  
 
3. Social Sciences
6 s.h.
    Two courses minimum totaling at least 6.0 credit hours. Select courses from: Anthropology, Business, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology.  
4. Addional Electives 9 s.h.
    Select additional courses from Social Sciences or Humanities and Fine Arts above to bring the total to 30 credit hours (including ENGL 312).  
 
5. English Competency  
    Competency in English must be demonstrated by: (1) Achieving a score of 3 or better on the Advanced Placement English Test (CEEB); (2) achieving a grade of "C" or better on a departmentally administered competency exam; (3) achieving a "C" or higher in a composition course (may be counted in 4 above).
